Luster’s You Be-Natural Product Launch in NYC July 2014

I would be a liar if I said I didn’t love me some Luster’s Pink Oil! So when I got the opportunity to hang out at their launch event for the extension of their You Be-Natural line of products, I was totes excited.

The event was held at the Dream Hotel Downtown, which was a nice backdrop. Luster’s You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment was the featured product of the night. According to hairstylist, ambassador and product developer, Kevin Pendleton, a.k.a. ‘K.P. the Texture Man,’ the You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment alone doesn’t stretch and relax the curl, it’s the heat (if any) that is used in conjunction with the treatment. The treatment is made up of amino acides that bind to the hair restoring any protein loss due to color, as well as allowing moisture to better adhere to the hair shaft.

He added that the product bonds to the hair shaft, filling in any gaps. This means that wearers experience less frizzy because the hair isn’t “searching” for moisture in the hair and swelling (in other words, frizzing out like an electrocuted Cocker Spaniel) because the hair shaft has been filled-in with moisture-blocking amino acids. Frizz free summers? Sounds good to me.

The product is made for those who love their natural hair, love their texture but want to cut down on the wash day drama. He said, the You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment “was designed for women who, number one, [say] ‘Don’t mess with my texture!'” Those who try the Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment can expect the stretching action to last 4-8 weeks, depending on how often the hair is washed and how often it’s washed with shampoos that have strong cleansing agents in them. In order for this treatment to last, it’s best to use a sulfate-free shampoo.

“As a man, I believe natural Hair can be sexy,” he said on stage. “You can have whatever you want.” Can the church to say AMEN?!

Let me tell y’all, KP the Texture Man dropped MAJOR hair knowledge. This guy knows natural hair, and most importantly, he has a passion for natural hair. The team at Luster’s picked a great collaborator for this product. I could create a whole other post just based on the gems he shared in the presentation. (I just might have to do that!)

Being a no-fuss naturalista, hair writer and hair-identified (yes, I’m making that at ‘thing.’ People always know me by my hair. Even strangers. It never fails.), I’m not usually the one to jump on the bandwagon of new products. However, what I saw as far as the product line I was eager to try.

I picked up three You Be-Natural products: the Botanical Tangle Me Knot Detangling Shampoo, Botanical Deep Moisturizing & Softening Mayonnaise Conditioner, and the Botanical Curl Shaper Custard for Tightly Coiled Textures. They were a steal at three for $10. The full product line was available, an in hindsight, I wished I’d picked up the stretching system since it was only $15 and I expect it to double in price by the time it hits store shelves. As I use the products (which I’m pretty excited about) I’ll give reviews on each individually.
