Living the dream

…is a scary thing. The Dream, the thing you strive for. That you daydream about while making $10.50 an hour at your retail job. Something you tell people you’ll do–someday.

SOMEDAY IS NOW. SOMEDAY IS TODAY. TOMORROW. YESTERDAY, EVEN.

That’s the thing about The Dream. You’re not sure how it happened. The circumstances don’t play out how you thought they would. It doesn’t look or even feel like you thought it would. On Feeling Like a Creative Fraud

YOU ARE A STUPID,
BIG, FAT PHONY.

And so am I. But we know in our hearts it’s not true.

Feeling like a creative fraud is a mother. And, as an artist, you go through periods of where you feel like a big, fat phony.

It’s times your fingers hover, paralyzed over the keyboard. Times you stare at the blank void while creative mojo seeps from your fingertips and on to every place but its pre-determined target. Times when ‘love is a battlefield,’ and you’re on the ground, wounded. Times you’re physically unable to create because you know, for a fact, that you’re a creative fraud. A hack, even. You don’t believe you’re a real artist. Who would believe that?! You most certainly don’t believe it. You just ain’t 2 Legit 2 Quit.

Just Start: Choose to Take Steps Toward a Goal

There will never be the perfect time to do something, so just start. Take a goal and break it down into the next smallest action. Do that action, then cross it off the list. Using myself as an example (’cause I don’t want to throw anyone else under the bus) of how waiting for perfection instead of creating favorable conditions for myself only held me back. [Read more…]
