My New Rules for Writing: A Somewhat Manifesto

November 17, 2014 By ARMOURELLE

"Write like a motherfucker." One of my new rules for writing.

So, I’m taking this blog in a new direction. Less stupid, filler stuff and more meaningful content. In an effort to keep this blog chock full o’ the good stuff, here are the new rules for writing:

1. Don’t be safe. Being safe isn’t being brave.

2. If it embarrasses you, write it. Write it because someone else can relate.

3. Edit until the manuscript bleeds. Use the sword. Stab it. Kill it. Burn the corpse. Then, allow the phoenix to rise from the ashes.

4. Don’t hide. Bare it on the page.

5. Feed yourself. Fill the well often, so you can empty it by filling others.

6. Go to the edge of the page–whatever that means at the moment you’re writing. Don’t over think it. Just do it. Your intuition will tell you how.

7. If all else fails, write. “Not like a girl. Not like a boy. Write like a motherfucker.“

These new rules for writing are gonna be fun.

One Very Important Reason it isn’t Frivolous to Look Your Best Everyday

Get It While You Iz Young

I was chatting with a friend’s mom during HH* and asked her for some practical advice. You know, the sort of things she’d tell her younger self about dating, self-esteem and life. Ms. E. loves to chat, so I knew she’d drop some major knowledge. One subject she mentioned resonated with me. It was about choosing to look your best everyday. (I’m making attempts to look put together, rather than dressing like a college kid late for an 8:30 a.m. class.) Here’s a paraphrasing of what she said:

Pink Hair in the Office? I say ‘YES!’

My Magenta Ombre Hair

My Magenta Hair Gang Moment — Just one hue of my coif of many colors

Non-traditional hair colors are becoming more popular. (Forget those face-framing caramel highlights and rich chocolate browns.) I’ll admit it: I’m a fan. When it comes to the workplace, hair colors like hot pink, indigo blue and fire engine K. Michelle red can be workplace appropriate. It’s a matter of office culture, perception and styling, and color choice.

When we change our hair through styling methods, we feel better about ourselves because we control our image. If you consider yourself a cute hipster-adjacent professional, you’ll feel better when your hair, clothes and makeup match how you perceive yourself.

Office politics are a quiet, unspoken war we fight daily with our co-workers and boss. And we will all get judged in the workplace based on our appearance, which is a form of non-verbal communication.
